Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a town and municipality located northeast of Canary Island of Gran Canaria , which is capital, it also has the capital of the province of Las Palmas and share capital of the Canary Islands with Santa Cruz Tenerife .
The city was founded in 1478 , being considered capital de facto the Canary Islands to century XVII . [2] It now houses the headquarters of the permanent delegation of the Government of Spain in the archipelago and the presidency of the autonomous government in legislative periods alternate and other institutions of varying importance as the Africa House .
With a population of 381,847 inhabitants is the largest city of the Canary Islands and the ninth of Spain, has a metropolitan area of over 600,000. [3] The municipality covers an area of 100.55 km ² ( ISTAC , 2003). Its height is 8 meters above sea level (in the southernmost part). The climate is of low rainfall, with an average temperature of about 22 ° C.
